Doug Clifford, the band's drummer, retained the services of Stu Cook, who decided to switch from bass to rhythm guitar - a notable shift, but not as notable as Clifford's emerging from behind the drums to be a lead vocalist. Such a big shift warrants a heavy level of support, which he received in the form of bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn and guitarist John McFee, along with selected members of the Walter Hawkins Singers and horns from the Tower of Power.
Cosmo is the only solo studio album by former Creedence Clearwater Revival drummer Doug Clifford, released shortly after that band's breakup. In a 2012 interview, Clifford was critical of the album: On June 22, 2018, the album was reissued by Craft Recordings (along with fellow Creedence alumni Tom Fogerty's second solo album, Excalibur).
Doug ‘Cosmo’ Clifford was originally released in 1972, and has been long out-of-print. The reissue LP, cut at Fantasy Studios by George Horn and Anne-Marie Suenram, is an important addition to the record collection of Creedence aficionados. Clifford’s simple grooves and impeccable timing, heard on 1960s/70s CCR hits including Fortunate Son, "Proud Mary, Born on the Bayou and Who’ll Stop the Rain, have proven influential to future generations of Americana and roots rock drummers. Forbes had the unusual opportunity to sit down with Clifford, now 73, to discuss the new release as well as Clifford’s memorable years in CCR.
