Best of & the Rest of Steeleye Span is a budget reissue of 1989's Early Years that includes only the first 14 tracks. It's worthwhile for the inclusion of the unreleased "Rave On," and the Maddy Prior and Tim Hart solo ventures "The Brisk Young Butcher" and "Westron Wynde," but the true completist would fare better with the vinyl version of Early Years as the CD reissue omits four tracks.

In 2001, Steeleye Span were in shambles. After the excellent Bedlam Born, three of the four members of that lineup (guitarist/vocalist Bob Johnson, vocalist Gay Woods, and bassist Tim Harries) called it quits from the band, leaving violinist Peter Knight hanging. It is easily the best song the band has recorded in many, many years, and is more than a worthy inclusion on this album. Stunning, absolutely stunning. Steeleye Span formed in 1969 from members of Fairport Convention and out of the ashes of Sweeney's Men creating a distinctive fusion of both British folk with electric rock music. The resulting first version of the band was formed by ex-Fairport bassist Ashley Hutchings and built around two pairs of vocalists, Tim Hart and Maddy Prior and Gay & Terry Woods.
