This album explores these themes in a very subtle and emotional way. It doesn't provide answers, just a point of view, but it's one that really speaks to me on a personal level. We're but tiny specks of dust, but we have each other. Madeline v. F. As Black Metal's Byronic titans, who both defined and transformed that genre, Ulver's place in history is well-secured. Rather than resting on laurels, however, they've continued to surprise and enchant for nearly two decades since, with offerings in manifold musical styles
Listening to this album it's impossible to remember that Ulver was a black metal band. All is so ethereal, impalpable; keyboards and strings seem to create a soundtrack for an infinite journey. The sound is close to David Sylvian music, but the voice is even more expressive and magnetic.
Shadows of the Sun forgets the debauchery of Blood Inside. It comes back to a composition closer from the spirit of Perdition City, but with some variations, where the influence of Svidd Neger is also palpable (the jazzy touches of Perdition City are there, the aerial saxophone is back, but the neoclassic parts are much more present). So, take these two albums, mix them, and try to imagine what could be the result if they were quieter and more nostalgic. So, how shall be judged this album? Yes, Ulver has created a masterpiece. Ulver remains Ulver, it keeps gathering the same disparate elements with a genius which explains fully why this album is amazingly good instead of being a complete incomprehensible mess. The band composes more than ever for itself and it exposes its soul.
Listen free to Ulver – Shadows of the Sun (Eos, All the Love and more). Shadows of the Sun is the seventh studio album by the Norwegian experimental collective Ulver. Produced by Ulver, the album was issued in October, 2007, via Jester Records and The End Records.
Ulver describes their latest album, Shadows of the Sun, as dark, tragic, and low-key just like they are. One word they left out is pointless. This album is pointless, and if Ulver keeps this up, then they are pretty pointless as well. Don’t get me wrong, I love post-black metal Ulver albums like Themes from William Blake’s the Marriage of Heaven and Hell, and A Quick Fix of Melancholy. I just believe that this particular style is rather worthless. First of all, the vocals on this album are just bad. I am a huge fan of Garm’s work, but on this album, he really isn’t trying at all. Garm’s.

Since the 2007 release of Shadows of the Sun, the Oslo-based collective has busied themselves broadening the grounds of their multi-dimensional, multiconfessional church. It explores the familiars of life and death, love and loss – but from the furthermost purview. All the electricity of life, playing out as perfect circles on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. We are captive to its long shadows. It is a pensive, quiet work singularly committed to an aesthetic of beauty.
Shadows of the Sun. Import. I find in the absent of light outside and in my head is the best time to listen to this album. It offers little hope of a brighter moments until the sun sits at high noon. Only there will no shadows reside. I can think of no other album (there might be I just dont know about it) that is so sad and dark. Not stupid satanic dark but just pure audio depression. Its very slow and somber with out a touch of percussion. The whole album is about loss and the pathway to the grave (literally or figuratively)
