Mount Eerie’s newest album, Wind’s Poem, is most frequently a case of the latter. Elverum has said that one of the biggest inspirations for Wind’s Poem is the work of . black metal artists such as Xasthur, so it should come as no surprise that the album is, in various parts, one of Elverum’s loudest works. The album, itself, is not a black metal album so much as an epic, indie rock album that incorporates various elements of haunting, cinematic and supernatural metal. The closest that Elverum & Co. come to the blistering, cavernous roar of Xasthur or Wolves in the Throne Room is on the.

Wind’s Dark Poem, The Hidden Stone and The Mouth of Sky unleash torrents of crushing decibels invoking images of storm-battered landscapes. Elverum contrasts such pieces with quietly melodic songs like My Heart is Not at Peace and Between Two Mysteries, which wrap pagan-like musings within soft, ghostly tones. While the album’s overall mood is fairly grim, there’s a sense of spiritual awe present in such cted tracks as Through the Trees and Stone’s Ode that lift the album beyond mere bleakness. This is serious stuff, demanding at times, but potentially transformative to the right set of ears.

The guy who opened the album Mount Eerie with a 17-minute song meant to simulate the listener’s birth, crafted from breaking static, heartbeats, and tribal drums. Like some of its predecessors, Wind’s Poem will straight up smack you in the face. and you’ll like it for that. If unaccustomed with what Mr. Elverum does, especially on the Mount Eerie front, it may be even more jarring to listen to Wind’s Poem. Even the biggest Microphones/Mount Eerie fans will be surprised by the album’s crassness
