Wilco (The Album) is the seventh studio album by American alternative rock group Wilco which was released June 30, 2009. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Americana Album. After Wilco released their sixth studio album, Sky Blue Sky, in 2007, they spent the following two years touring to promote the album.

Even if Schmilco isn’t Wilco’s most exciting album, it’s among their most consistent and immediately gratifying. In We Aren’t the World (Safety Girl), Tweedy swipes the chorus from one of pop music’s most shameless stabs at universality, then subverts it by directing it at one person. Schmilco is another decidedly minor release from a band whose best work (Being There, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot) once felt like landmarks– but it succeeds in its subtle, freewheeling self-awareness, as hinted by the punny album title and the Joan Cornellà-penned cover art.

No, this album just isn't all the way there. I don't think they spent the time on it to craft the songs to full creative realization. Its not that its not "good," - it is good.

Schmilco is the tenth studio album by Chicago-based alternative rock band Wilco and was released on September 9, 2016. Wilco announced the album on July 19, 2016, and released two songs, "Locator" and "If I Ever Was a Child". The album's announcement came a little more than a year after their previous studio album, Star Wars. In February 2016, Jeff Tweedy first mentioned in an interview that Wilco would be releasing an album in 2016, though did not go into detail

We tried so hard", Wilco sing on Schmilco closer "Just Say Goodbye", "as if I have the answers". Back in a July 2009 interview with SPIN mag, describing the band's self-titled record contract wrap-up seventh album, frontman Jeff Tweedy told the world, "I think people are ready to laugh with us more". Two discussions surrounding the band's tenth full-length outing, Schmilco, have overpowered conversation over actual album content: that of the album's name, and that of its cover. Last year, the band returned out of nowhere with the cat poster free download ninth album Star Wars, and in less than a full 12 months, they follow it with a deeper plunge into the non-sequitur.

Album · 2016 · 12 Songs. Schmilco is a largely acoustic set of heartbreaking folk rock, marked by uncluttered arrangements and some of frontman Jeff Tweedy’s most personal songwriting to date-as heard in the brutal retrospection of Normal American Kids and the glammy warmth of Someone to Lose.

I have the 180g pressing, and it sounds very good. Absolutely no surface noise. Very clean, and warm sounding.
One of the warmest pressings I've ever heard. And this album is a dark masterpiece. Their most minimalist ever, while still retaining the sense of adventure that populates their best work.
Knights from Bernin
Stick with the black vinyl for this one. I had an orange copy, it was noisy, didn't sound good. I emailed the label, and they were kind enough to send a replacement black copy. Black copy sounds amazing, and it reminded me of why I love vinyl so much.
Can anyone tell the European pink from the UK white/pink version? I do have both of them (just bought the UK version) and cannot tell the difference? Thanks.
Shmilco is the amazing result of a band that continues to change. Only the godfathers of Midwestern indie/folk could have crafted such an organic statement of brevity: the work of veteran sound smiths who have been bombastic in the past, and now are comfortable just bellowing out their niche, Neil Young-influenced brand of indie rock.
My European copy is more than average warped and has a crack at side 1 track 1 and 2.Too bad I can't change it (because it was bought during the sales of Mediamarkt Belgium).
Anyone else have a fine crack on the edge of the vinyl? I have two copies of this album on pink vinyl (I got both from VInyl Me Please) and they both have the same problem, the first one skips endlessly while the second one they sent as a replacement plays fine despite the crack. They were selling them extra cheap...

Mine was pressed off center on side two. Many of the the pink run, US and UK, were like this. Pressing issues. Discussed online at the Steve Hoffman forums.
Yes, that and it's off-center, which is so typical anymore.
Mine looks and plays fine. One of my favorite records of the year. It is the quiet, awkward little brother of the loud and boisterous Star Wars. I love them both.
I got the pink version! I am pleased. Great album!
I'm so glad I got the black vinyl version. It's got that sweet analog warmth that Star Wars was missing a bit. Top notch vinyl quality.
Follow-up on plants. Got this info from customer service when going back and forth about the orange and black pressings:"The orange copies were pressed at Independent Record Pressing and the black copies were pressed at Quality Record Pressing."I ended up just going with a 180g black as an exchange.
Turns out that a lot of these arrived warped. Distributor (Kung Fu) has been graciously replacing them with the black vinyl release (pressed elsewhere). I'd be wary about paying $60 for one of these (current going price on discogs) without asking the seller to open and inspect. Seems a lot of these are bad.
I have an orange copy that is only the slightest bit warped, not noticeable at all on playback.
Yea, Kung Fu said the color pressings were from a different plant than the black pressings.
Yeah, mine is noticeably offer center and with slight warp but plays beautifully after removing the static. The black 180s were pressed at QRP but I'm not so sure about any of the color pressings, the quality seems questionable.
I linke the album but i miss some of the epic Nels Cline guitar work.Excellent Vinyl, dead flat and almost no surface noise
Is the download card just for an MP3 version or is there a lossless option? Already downloaded via the advance code so don't want to use this one unnecessarily.
Noticeable pops on Track 1, side 1. Emailed customer service about it and they said:"We are very sorry you received a defective vinyl. It looks like this is turning out to be a widespread issue and we have been in touch with management on how to proceed. Please bear with us as we figure this out together. We appreciate your patience and will be in touch soon with information. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask."So, let's see how this goes. Will update once I get some notification.
I had issues with my copy on side 1 as well, emailed customer service and got the same response. Just received this update yesterday. Think I will opt for the black vinyl in this case. "At this time we are offering to replace the defective orange vinyl Schmilco albums with black vinyl. The black vinyl was pressed at a different pressing plant and we have not had issues with them. The problems with the orange vinyl are widespread and we are awaiting a resolution from the pressing plant. Please let us know if you would like to receive a black vinyl replacement for your defective Schmilco album."
I bought this version of the record in the store Dr. Disc in Hamilton ON Canada today, so it's obviously not mailorder only.
Is this the Rough Trade exclusive variant? Thought it was pink/white
The pantone colour of the UK limited final version pink (process from white to pink) is different to the pantone of the US one. Makes perfect sense eh?!
It is getting stranger and stranger!??!?! https://www.discogs.com/de/Wilco-Schmilco/release/9033881Means there are white vinyl versions of it??
Rocky Basilisk
Yeah, ordered online, and it arrived Friday. The slipmat is the image of the girl dancing in the final panel. Looks pretty neat.
Did you order online at Rough Trade? Wonder if I get any extras, too?!
This is the one I got from Rough Trade. They threw in a slipmat too.
Yeah it's not a Rough Trade exclusive pressing, it is a RSD indies only pressing.
Thanks for the info man. I saw all pressings in one picture on the band's IG ... pretty confusing indeed. Did not receive my RT exclusive yet - but I am afraid that it will be the same than the opaque pink---RT did this several times: announcing exclusive pressings and then they were all over the place
Spoke to lost in vinyl yesterday. The pink/white variant started press as white and they added pink until completely pink for the 750 pressing at request of the band. Quite confusing given that there seems to be an opaque pink non limited pressing too.
No this issue is completely pink. Got it in my local record store.
Watch out, here they come again with an album you’re either gonna love, hate, or if you’re like this reviewer, you’re gonna take the songs that speak to you and add them to an ever growing collection of Wilco numbers that shine. By shine I mean that Wilco is one of those bands who put out a splendid amount of sensational tracks, but never seem to find their way when it comes to putting together one flawless album of undeniable material. With that being said, I will suggest that all of the material found on Schmilco will sound amazing when presented live, and therein lies my dilemma with Jeff Tweedy and his merry band of gunslingers … what I hear during a show is not what I want to hear when I drop a record onto my turntable. Now, I’m more than sure that there are those out there who will praise this album to the high heavens, giving it no less than five stars, and sincerely, I’m glad those people are out there walking the planet, because without them, I would miss the four or five tracks off of each album that thrill me no end.Listening to the album, one can not help being conflicted, as Tweedy’s undertaking seems to be aimed at a lot of people and things that piss him off, or have escaped his grasp of understanding … and I don’t know about you, but I rather tire of listening to my friends complain all the time, yet alone purchasing an album that takes aim at Jeff’s pet peeves … though in all honesty, he does seem to enjoy his bit of neurotic high octane darkness. In all manners Schmilco is an absolute extension of Star Wars, and I for one would like to see the band concentrate on songs such as “If Ever I Was A Child,” “Cry All Day,” and “We Aren’t The World (Safety Girl),” songs that feature the band’s innate ability to deliver pure fuzzed out alternative country at its very best. But that’s just me, living on the fringe of what Wilco see fit to put out, meaning that for the last twenty some years and ten or so albums, I’m still pickin’ and choosin’ what Wilco songs I’m going to keep, and which ones I’m going to let gather dust.Review by Jenell Kesler
