The album is widely considered by fans and critics as the creative peak of the band. Fishbone experienced a large growth in concert tickets and record sales during this period, making two memorable television appearances: performing "Sunless Saturday" and "Everyday Sunshine" on Saturday Night Live, and "Everyday Sunshine" on The Arsenio Hall Show.

HIGHLY underrated Fishbone record. These guys really put together a solid group of songs with excellent, thoughtful, intricate writing and musicianship. What I love about this album is that it has it all, I might even be bold as to say that it’s the second coming of P-Funk on some of the funkier tracks. Songs like Black Flowers and They All Have Abandoned Their Hopes still send chills down my spine from their dark under tones. It’s a shame that it was ahead of its time and was a flop when it came out and the record company eventually dropped the band. Everyone wanted Fishbone to play ska all the time and when they actually wrote some interesting tunes, everyone put their musical prejudices in front of their ears and never gave it a chance.

While the band retained their roots in funk and ska, the 1993 album Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe included songs with hard rock, punk, and heavy metal elements. At the time of the album's release, the band began to tear apart internally. Just before Fishbone joined the 1993 Lollapalooza tour, guitarist Kendall Jones was accused of mental instability and quit the band, moving to Northern California.

Either way, he quit the band immediately after the release for 1993's lackluster Give a Monkey a Brai. .While the funk/punk/ska sound on earlier albums was still evident here and there, this is considered Fishbone's heavy metal album by longtime fans. The witty humor and thought-provoking songwriting had been lost and replaced with such predictable fare as the grunge-sounding "Swim," and such woefully off-the-mark compositions as "The Warmth of Your Breath" and "Drunk Skitzo.
