James George Hunter (August 19, 1918 – May 28, 1996), known professionally as Jimmy Rowles, was an American jazz pianist, vocalist, and composer. Rowles was born in Spokane, Washington and attended Gonzaga University in that city. After moving to Los Angeles, he joined Lester Young's group in 1942. He also worked with Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Les Brown, Tommy Dorsey, Tony Bennett, and as a studio musician.

I still can't decide what's better: listening to him playing or singing? He has this perfect voice for an imperfect art - jazz; that is to say, dusty, dry, or gritty. On the other hand, J. Rowles uses space in his playing like no one else. Even the great Ahmad Jamal isn't as great in comparison with Mr. Rowles.

born on 19/8/1918 in Spokane, WA, United States. died on 29/5/1996 in Los Angeles, CA, United States. Rowles was praised as an accompanist by female singers.
