It reached number 2 in the Billboard Top 200 and produced four singles: "March of the Pigs", "Closer", "Piggy" (radio only), and "Hurt" (radio only). Album sales: 4,000,000 First release date: March 1994.

Nine Inch Nails' second studio album, The Downward Spiral, entered the Billboard 200 at number two, and remains the highest-selling Nine Inch Nails release in the United States for shipments of over four million copies, in addition to selling five million copies worldwide. Influenced by late-1970s works by Pink Floyd and David Bowie, The Downward Spiral includes. A further six years elapsed before Nine Inch Nails' fourth full-length album. With Teeth was released in May 2005, though it was leaked prior to its official release date. The album was written and recorded throughout 2004 following Reznor's battle with alcoholism and substance abuse and legal issues with his former manager, John Malm Jr. With Teeth debuted on top of the Billboard 200, Nine Inch Nails' second reign at number one with an album. The album's package lacks typical liner notes; instead it simply lists the names.

Nine Inch Nails second full-length studio album, The Downward Spiral (aka Halo 8) was created as a partially self-biographical tale about a man who was on a ‘downward spiral’ through depression to suicide. As with Halo 5, the album was recorded at 10050 Cielo Drive, the site Sharon Tate’s murder by the ‘Manson family’ in 1969. The house was converted into a record studio that Reznor called ‘Le Pig’, referencing when Susan Atkins wrote ‘Pig’ in Tate’s blood on the front door of the house. While I was working on Downward Spiral, I was living in the house where Sharon Tate was killed.

The left-field hit "Closer" made him a postmodern shaman for the '90s, obsessed with exposing the dark side he saw behind even the most innocuous façades. In fact, his theatrics on The Downward Spiral - all the preening self-absorption and serpentine sexuality - seemed directly descended from Jim Morrison. Yet Reznor's nihilism often seemed like a reaction against some repressively extreme standard of purity, so the depravity he wallowed in didn't necessarily seem that depraved

Before Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor did upstanding things like marry, procreate, get ripped, and win an Academy Award, he made one of the most upsetting, misunderstood, and enduring album of the ‘90s, The Downward Spiral, which turns 20 on March 8. With bleak cover art based on a painting called Wound, and songs about nihilism and self-abuse, Spiral was never an obvious contender for 50 Cent mashups and MTV omnipresence

Those familiar with the album will be aware that not every track here has been dissected. For space reasons that's inevitable. Nine Inch Nails have a reputation for making music that's a stereotype, and while they may lapse into that on other albums, on The Downward Spiral even the music that sounds basic has hidden layers of complexity. Hell, on Heresy, German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is quoted in Reznor's scream of "God is dead," which turns out to be so important to the album. Although The Downward Spiral is splenetic and furious, everyone can identify with it on some level. We may not like to admit it, but the way in which we propelled this album into the upper echelons of popular culture speaks louder than our words.

The Downward Spiral has always been one of "those" discs for me. You know the ones: if you lost your entire music collection, which albums would you start with. TDS would be in he top 25. Now I had heard "With Teeth" and "And All That Might Have Been" in . Dolby Surround, but neither of those compare with this jewel, in my opinion.

10. NIne Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral. With Teeth: The second coming, sober yet wiser. Changes album name due to period jokes. The Incredible Sulk (Bulked up and shaved) Friendship ended with Brian, Atticus is my best friend now. Time to go bald again.
