Contiguglia excerpt from Beethoven-Liszt 9th Symphony 4th Movement. ogg ‎(Ogg Vorbis sound file, length 58 s, 62 kbps). Excerpt from Liszt's 1850 transcription of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (Movement IV) for two pianos, four hands. Performed by by Richard and John Contiguglia, August 1972.

Liszt – Operatic Fantasies) -Gramophone, London. Richard and John Contiguglia treated the elegant Mozart Double Concerto with identical mastery – vibrant, songful and crystalline playing. For the music lovers in the hall there was something privileged about being able to leave the concert with the highest attainable musical happiness on earth. The twin brothers, Richard and John Contiguglia, gave us an interpretation (Bartók’s Concerto for Two Pianos, Percussion and Orchestra) that commanded mesmerized listening by its amazing rhythmic subtlety, dynamic depth and keen expression. All the elements of this fascinating work came out perfectly: . the ‘white-knuckled’ tension of this complex score, characterized above all by the gouging, hammering rhythmic structure.

Richard and John Contiguglia (born 13 April 1937) are American classical duo pianists with a worldwide reputation, who consistently attract superlatives from critics. The Contiguglia brothers are identical twins. They were born in Auburn, New York, of Italian immigrant parents, who already had five children including another set of twins. They were playing duets by the age of 5. At age 12, in the midst of a solo piano recital by Percy Grainger, they performed some piano-duo pieces. The brothers Contiguglia have rediscovered, performed and recorded a number of unusual and forgotten works from the duo-piano repertoire, including all the Schubert duets and duos. They gave the New York premiere of Max Bruch's Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra in A flat minor. Other modern-day premiere performance or world premiere recordings include Bartók's Suite for Two Pianos, Op.

The twodisk album also includes Liszt's transcription of his Festival Cantata, an early and occasional work that was written to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Beethoven's birth in Bonn, Germany. This transcription, of course, gives no indication of how the vocal element would play a part, yet the. work is indubitably Lisztian in its harmonic and melodic style. The piece is unusual in its incorporation of part of the slow movement of Beethoven's Archduke Trio into the cantata, and it is the orchestration of this section that is a distinguishing element of the original.
