John Russell (born 1954 in London) is an acoustic guitarist who has worked exclusively in the field of free improvisation since the 1970s. He has been active consistently during that time as a promoter of concerts of freely improvised music in London, providing hundreds of playing opportunities for both local and international musicians. Russell has appeared on more than 50 published recordings.
Excerpts & Offerings.
The Keune/Russell duo is surely one of the most energetic improvisation settings I’ve experienced lately. Without a trace of lassitude their sound is always prosperous and full of fantasies, catching your attention even in those moments when you’re not completely concentrated. If there ever were possible comparisons between John Russell and his fellow Englishman guitarist Roger Smith, they are found on Excerpts & Offerings. His restrained, embroidered acoustic guitar work recalls Smith’s Extended Plays or his work with Three Pullovers. But Russell is his own man and a fearsome improviser.
German reedman Stefan Keune has shown a strong affinity for British improv since making a connection with drummer Paul Lytton in 1990. Since then his discography records a number of dates with guitarist John Russell, including appearances at London's now dormant Freedom of the City festival.
Cмена караула 10 стран мира. Roger Turner, John Russell duo 1.
In 1993, Keune invited John Russell to join the group re-christened Beware of Art. The quartet made only a few appearances, but the saxophonist and the British guitarist developed a special musical relationship. When Russell and drummer Roger Turner visited Oberhausen during a tour of Germany, they asked Keune to join them. Since 1997, he and Russell perform a few concerts annually as a duo, eventually releasing Excerpts & Offerings on Acta in January 2001. This association has been long-lasting and is mostly responsible for Keune's first international exposure. The duo visited Japan.
