His father played the mellophone, and his mother played the piano; in fact, she gave Basie his first piano lessons. She took in laundry and baked cakes for sale for a living . Basie's new band which included many Moten alumni, with the important addition of tenor player Lester Young. They played at the Reno Club and sometimes were broadcast on local radio. Late one night with time to fill, the band started improvising.

In den 30er Jahren wurde er als Saxophonist in der Band von Count Basie weltberühmt. Er revolutionierte die Spielweise des Instruments, in dem er neue Wege der Improvistation einschlug und bis dahin geltende Regeln der Harmonik brach. Gleichzeitig hatte er aber auch schon früh ein ungesundes Verhältnis zum Alkohol entwickelt. Kurz vor Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde er zur Armee eingezogen.
