Your Black Star was formed in 2001 by singer/guitarist Jeremy Johnson and drummer Andrew Osborn, two kindred spirits bonded by their love of bombastic, fearless rock ’n’ roll. Like a lot of bands, the birthing process proved difficult; bassists came and went before a true fellow traveler was discovered in Brandon Duggins. They have taken a decidedly unorthodox approach to building a fan base. Sound from the Ground, the band’s American debut, won critical acclaim stateside, tagging Your Black Star with the weighty next big thing label. Expectations can stifle a band, but the trio is confronting them head on. In fact, confrontation could be the keyword as Your Black Star prepares its next record, Beasts for release in July 2007. It’s more direct this time around. It’s much more raw, much less produced, Johnson said.

Sounds from the Ground (SFTG) is an English electronic music duo formed in 1995. Both members Nick Woolfson and Elliot Jones met through their involvement with the underground music scene in London. Their style has been described as ambient dub-techno by musical critic Jason Birchmeier ) with a combination of analog and digital gear".

It contained 14 tracks of sizzling reggae, mainly (but not exclusivley) roots bands, all of them from Bristol & from the late 70’s, early 80’s. I had no idea that Bristol had such a rich heritage of reggae artists, which I guess was the point of compilation – and indeed is, to a large extent, the whole idea behind Bristol Archive Records. It’d be nice to think that with the release of this album Black Roots will get the attention they deserve. I could never understand why Black Roots didn’t get more attention back in the 80’s. Even with the endorsement of Peel they never became as well known as the Aswads or Steel Pulses of this world.

The 16-track album, which was released in four parts last week, favours slow-tempo, jazzy, soulful sounds – a far cry from the head-bobbing pop tunes we’re used to hearing from her. The searing ballad, Think About That, hints at the possible reason for this drastic shift in her musical identity. The song details a close associate who used her and betrayed her over the years she spent building her career. Now finally free from the mysterious figure she calls a shark, a cheat, a traitor, perhaps Jessie has realised her true potential and is finally coming into her own with the new sound.
