Pure Motorised Instinct. Where all of the Pure Motorised Instinct music was written and recorded, except for the track 'Everything is true' which started at Mission Control in south London and was completed here.

Between Intimacy and Elsewhere. About Pure Motorised Instinct. It’s all in that name really. Not in any sense considering himself a musician or technical mastermind, Stephen Jarvis let his instincts guide him through the demise of Nagamatzu to a different kind of musical endeavour. Recorded at his home studio in East London he set off to pursue that other darkness he loved. His inner astronaut takes us on a flight, slowly spinning off into space past sparkli. See Full Bio. Rather than being divided into side 1 & 2, or ‘A’ & ‘B’, this little recording has a skull symbol for the first side & a star for the second. As with the above tape album, you get the immediate impression, just from looking at the cover, that a lot of effort has been put into making this. The design, by VII SINS is rather good (they have offered to do a future cover for SOFT WATCH so you could he experiencing them soon).Side skull begins with the haunting (and surprisingly memorable) “Invisible” - sounding not unlike something you might find on a O.M.D. or BOWIE / ENO album, but with a little more edge, a little more attraction. “Blood From The Moon” might sound tasty, but fails to manage it, again sounding like a rather haunting O.M.D. album track. “Spiral” follows this, maintaining the mood - one of peace, one of beauty - another exercise in tranquility. Following this mood to the end of side 'skull’ is the memorable "Ganymede” a little darker, a little more disturbing, but more majestic than fearful. Snatches of Astronaut dialogue are heard now and then as the barely moving music gradually metamorphosises into something more complex, subtle drum rhythms join the tympani which had untiI then provided the beat. Its a long track, quiet and passive, slipping past your ears like ethereal fog.Side ‘Star’ opens with "Laika" following very similar lines to "Ganymede”, a rich and well-developed synthesizer piece which moves so slowly it lulls you into a passive state while subtle changes go on in the background. You seem to lose sense of time listening to this - it is so sedate. It gives way to the equally drifting "Astra" which is perhaps a little more 'composed' but nly slightly. "Manka" follows this, maintaining the atmosphere but having a much more rigid structure. The album finally ends with "Folchakv" which has a definite New Age feel to it - pan pipe-like sounds performing almost as soft percusion to the gradually rolling ground mist of synth music (and by that I don't mean White Noise). A distant snatch of RUTGER HAUER's soliloquy from "Blade Runner" carries it finally to silence.I know this may not appeal to many of you reading this, but if you feel the slightest pang to try out this album, do not hesitate! I have compared it to some of O.M.D.'s more passive album tracks, and (perhaps unfairly) to the meandering music from the BOWIE / ENO albums. Add to that VANGELIS and some of the more palatable New Age sounds, mix them up inside your head and see what you think. I hope to have put of one of these tracks out on tape for you to try in issue #3 of SOFT WATCH - I think you may be impressed.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
