By May 26, "Rock 'n' Roll Ruby" had reached number 1 on the local pop chart; this record, his first for Sun, went on to outsell the first Sun releases by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. He recorded several more tracks for Liberty, mostly cover versions of recent country hits, to fill out an album, The First Country Collection of Warren Smith. He continued to record for Liberty, with some success, and toured with his band, from 1960 to 1965. On August 17, 1965, Smith suffered severe back injuries in a car crash in LaGrange, Texas.

An alumni of the Lawrence Welk Show, this album demonstrates Buddy’s ability to create solid entertaining arrangements, and the ability to masterfully play them - techniques probably learned during his tenure with Welk. Merrill employed Les Paul type multitracking to record the album, without the gimmicks. He also continued to perform live throughout high school in dances, social functions and at clubs. Merrill joined the Lawrence Welk Show in 1955, the same year it first went national on ABC. At nineteen his youth and energy made him very popular with the ladies and his artistry with the guitar made him highly-sought after as a live performer, studio musician and also garnered him respect within the music industry. He briefly left the show from 1959 to 1962 when he was drafted by the Army.
