Recorded on June 7, June 22–23 and July 19, 1967, at Columbia's 30th Street Studio, the album was Davis' last fully acoustic album. Davis himself did not contribute any compositions, which were mostly written by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.

The album's appeal was more widespread among critics following its reissue in 1997. Robert Gilbert of All About Jazz praised Porgy and Bess, describing it as "one of many great albums that Miles Davis recorded over his lifetime. It reaches a higher plateau than most, though, in its way that it can reach the listener on both a musical and emotional level. "Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (FLAC - Master Sound - Super Bit Mapping)". Terr
Cookin' and Relaxin' are essentially live in-studio recordings of the Miles' classic quintet. Miles needed to fulfill his contract with Prestige and the label wanted sides that were representative of the working group's live set. Along with Monk, McLean, Rollins, and Dolphy these are some of the best representations of Hard Bop at its peak. Workin' and Steamin,' recorded at the same sessions, are also worth pursuing.Great albums for any price. Most of the innovations: modal, Gil Evans--were left to the Columbia albums recorded around the same time. Prestige was known as a label that allowed musicians to come in and "blow."Note: Even though the labels state, "Stereo," these records are mono.
