nineteeneighties at first glance would seem an odd choice of work to indulge in for this long time independent artist. But having grown up in the eighties, for his fourth solo album Phillips decided to reach back to a time when he remembered for every hokey hair band there was at least one alternative. A time when alternative wasn’t something you were influenced by or called yourself for cool points, but simply were. They indeed sound like they belong on the same album, side by side. Grant Lee Phillips doesn’t simply cover these songs, he performs them like he wrote them. Changing the tempo, tweaking the melody, swapping the instruments, reimagining the idea of the songs, yet keeping them intact and giving them new heart. No small feat for any songwriter. If you are familiar with Phillips past work you will be familiar with this album.

Not surprisingly, this is the niche Grant-Lee Phillips focuses on for his covers album "Nineteeneighties," not the giddy '80s of excess but the '80s of underground innovation and word-of-mouth appeal.

The theme of this album is summed up simply enough in its title, on which Phillips covers 11 songs that should be immediately familiar to anyone who had their ear tuned to college radio or MTV's The Cutting Edge during the early to mid-'80s. The list of artists covered is certainly stellar enough - the Smiths, the Cure, Pixies, . Joy Division, Nick Cave, Robyn Hitchcock, the Psychedelic Furs, and more.

Grant Lee Phillips: Nineteeneighties. June 25 2006, 1:00am, The Sunday Times. A gentle stroll through the Pixies' Wave of Mutilation sets the tone for this album of cover versions, the former Grant Lee Buffalo singer's nod towards the 1980s bands who influenced him, and who defined alt-rock before the term came into use. Slow, soft, subtle, Phillips's interpretations cut so neatly to the heart of these songs that you sometimes find yourself thinking: "I bet the original band's demo sounded just like that.
