The Tar Pits have been excavated, downward, for more than 100 years, but this excavation- Project 23-is happening above ground, revealing discoveries that visitors can experience every day. Renowned as one of the world’s richest deposits of Ice Age fossils, the prehistoric jackpot at La Brea Tar Pits includes-so far-600 species of animals including dire wolves, ground sloths, and saber-toothed cats. A prized discovery in Project 23 was the near-complete skeleton of a Columbian mammoth nicknamed Zed.
By far the most popular mobs added by this mod are the prehistoric creatures. All prehistoric creatures (with the exception of naturally-spawning nautilus, alligator gar, coelacanth, and sturgeon) must be created by the player. Once created, they will have a gender of either male or female, and many of them can be tamed, commanded, and ridden.
The Tar Pits themselves are all active and if you are lucky you can see some tar bubbling up anywhere on the grounds. If you have time, take the tour, our guide was wonderful. Parking was no problem, the parking lot is right behind the museum. How often can you walk past open, bubbling pits of tar in the middle of LA? Look at mammoth and other skeletons perfectly preserved by the goo? Observe an ongoing dig?
A living fossil is an extant taxon that closely resembles organisms otherwise known only from the fossil record. To be considered a living fossil, the fossil species must be old relative to the time of origin of the extant clade. Living fossils commonly are species-poor lineages, but they need not be. Living fossils exhibit stasis over geologically long time scales.
Get an inside look at how we extract fossils from asphalt. We often liken our dig sites to "fossil gumbo" because the bones are normally jumbled together and very difficult to pick apart. But sometimes, all it takes is a little wiggle to find gorgeous specimens like this saber-toothed cat cervical vertebra (neck bone).
