Wesley Stace in Paris, c. 2007. Background information. Stace took his stage name from the Bob Dylan 1967 album John Wesley Harding, for which Dylan misspelled the outlaw John Wesley Hardin's name, adding a final 'g. .Stace was born in Hastings, East Sussex, England. The Man With No Shadow (unreleased, later issued as Adam's Apple with slightly different tracks) (many promotional copies exist) (2002). Dynablob 4: Swings & Roundabouts (studio, new material, fan club release) (2002). Garden of Eden: The Fall EP (EP) (2003). Songs of Misfortune (as the Love Hall Tryst) (2005). Who Was Changed And Who Was Dead (with The Minus Five) (2009). John Wesley Harding Sings to a Small Guitar, Volumes I & II (previously unreleased demos) (2010). The Sound of His Own Voice (2011).

John Wesley Harding is well into his second decade as a recording artist. As a literate but no longer new voice, he's no longer major-label material. Indeed, the well-traveled Brit who was once heralded as the heir to Elvis Costello has been hopping from indie to indie since he parted ways with Sire in the early '90s. So one wouldn't be shocked if his first new collection in four years felt like an exhausted last breath of a frustrated journeyman

Wesley Harding Stace was born in Hastings, East Sussex, England in 1965. He taught himself guitar, picking out songs by John Prine, Loudon Wainwright III, and Bob Dylan, and he eventually began writing on his own as a teenager. In 1988, he cut short his P. studies at Cambridge University in favor of a career in music. In 2011, there was a new John Wesley Harding album, The Sound of His Own Voice, and in 2013, Stace announced he planned to release his future recordings as Wesley Stace, beginning with the album he brought out that year, Self-Titled. In 2014, Stace published his fourth novel, Wonderkid, and in 2017, he struck a compromise between his two public personae with the release of the album Wesley Stace's John Wesley Harding, a collaboration with alt-country heroes the Jayhawks.

When John Wesley Harding presented himself back in 1989 as the cheeky Bastard Son of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, he may have been hiding the fact he was busy trading on a witty folk-rock style. He’s witty and smart on winning pop-rock fare and shows greater sensitivity and insight in songs about relationships: The dark, unsettling, yet eloquently written, Sussex Ghost Story reveals just how much Harding has developed as a songwriter. While it may not draw him back to the majors, Adam’s Apple certainly warrants the attention of the masses.

Gordon Mills's Most Recent Stories. So, there is this semi-recognizable cat on the front of the album out there in the woods, looking like some friend of Baudelaire, way back in 1844 in Le Vieux Quartier of Paris with a few friends from inside the walls. You might well ask, What’s it all about? The music is again a brilliant electronic adaptation of rural blues and country and western sounds. A swaying harp picks out the title track, John Wesley Harding. A statement is made about the concept of everyday Good and Evil.
