I've had the Cellophane Symphony vinyl LP for 30 years, and it's showing some wear. While I was only looking for that particular album, this double album seemed to be the only way to get it. Not that I minded that much-the price was right and I realized I recognized and liked some of the cuts on the "Crimson and Clover" side as well. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I liked more of the songs than I expected to. Until Cellophane Symphony came along, I never thought that I'd get a Tommy James & The Shondells album.
Crimson and Clover" is a 1968 song by American rock band Tommy James and the Shondells. Written by the duo of Tommy James and drummer Peter Lucia J. it was intended as a change in direction of the group's sound and composition. Crimson and Clover" was released in late 1968 as a rough mix after a radio station leaked it. It spent 16 weeks on the . charts, reaching number one in the United States (in February 1969) and other countries.
One of the most flexible units in late-'60s rock, Tommy James & the Shondells could go from teen-oriented power pop to way-out psychedelic experimentation without sounding derivative of anyone or allowing their own identity to become obscured. Generously combining two of their classic albums, Cellophane Symphony and Crimson & Clover, on a single CD, this reissue reminds us just how unpredictable the rockers could be. This was a band that managed to appeal to Beach Boys aficionados as well as the hippies who fancied Jefferson Airplane, the Doors, and Cream.

Tommy James & the Shondells - the very mention of their name, even to someone who doesn't really know their music, evokes images of dances and the kind of fun that rock & roll represented before it redefined itself on more serious terms. And between 1966 and 1969, the group enjoyed 14 Top 40 hits, most of which remain among the most eminently listenable (if not always respected) examples of pop/rock. In 1960, with his family now living in Niles, MI, 13-year-old James and a group of four friends from junior high school - Larry Coverdale on guitar, Larry Wright on bass, Craig Villeneuve on piano, and Jim Payne on drums - got together to play dances and parties.
